Fiat tuning specialist Abarth has unveiled two latest versions of the 500 at the Bologna motor show.
The 595 is available in both Turismo and Competizione guises – the former offering more style and comfort, the latter aimed more squarely at performance enthusiasts. Both models come with a 1.4 turbocharged motor producing 158 bhp and 170 lb ft of torque at 3000 rpm. This results in a claimed 0-62 mph sprint of 7.4 seconds and a 131 mph top speed. The engine makes use of an over-boost feature that controls the amount of turbo boost and is activated on the steering wheel via a ‘sport button’. Carried across from the older 500 is Torque Transfer Control, which helps to improve the transfer of torque to the driven wheels. Both 595s have a sporting theme befitting their performance capabilities and feature leather steering wheel, aluminum finished pedals, along with kick plate and gearbox trim surround. Exterior finishes include a two-tone livery paint finish, graphics and 595 logos. Turismo uses an electrically operated manual gearbox with steering wheel controls. The harder-core Competizione has a 5-speed manual transmission and rides on lower profile 17” titanium-coloured alloy wheels with Brembo brakes. Two performance customization kits are offered: The first provides perforated self-ventilated front and rear disc brakes, while the second throws in adjustable koni dampers and lower riding springs. Along with the two 595 models, Bologna also showcased the 202 bhp 695 Assetto Corse. Designed for racing use, yet still road-legal, the hottest version of the baby Fiat features a sequential gearbox and FIA regulations safety kit, including a roll-bar to increase torsional stiffness. It’s light too – having shed 30kg off the previous 500 Assetto Corse model’s weight, thanks to a stripped out race-spec interior that utilises perspex in place of glass for the windows. “With the choice between hatchback and convertible versions and in manual or Competizione form, we now have an Abarth 500 to suit all requirements and driving conditions,” says Ivan Gibson, head of Abarth in the UK.
