Skip To It: Maserati Sets Sail For Cadiz-San Salvador speed record

Next month a VOR 70 monohull sailboat (affectionately known as Maserati after its main sponsors) will be attempting the Cadiz-San Salvador speed record. The Skipper Giovanni Soldini and seven crew members will take the 3884 mile route across the North Atlantic from Spain to the Bahamas. Their boat will be the first Monohull to undertake this challenge; before it has only been trimarans (multihulled boats) so if they manage it, they will set a new speed record for this category.

In June 2000 U.S.A team `Club Med` set the fastest time for this course at 10 days 14 hours 53 minutes and 44 seconds and was skippered by Grant Dalton. Maserati has faith that fellow Italian, Giovanni Soldini will also play out his very best leadership skills to get the team admirable results. Soldini says of the challenge: “It is a demanding one, given the length and the difficulty of the route.” “In the first half of the journey our concern is the area of high pressure that could potentially block our path near the Azores. During the second half, the difficulties could be the fronts and depressions which, if too low, will slow the boat down. Nevertheless, I am sure it will be a fantastic experience and I am delighted with the entire crew.” You can watch live coverage of the event at: www.maserati.soldini.it, this will give you news, updates, photos, videos, metorological conditions and the position and speed of the Maserati.
