Beg, Borrow, Steal
The genetic selection process for the new SEAT Exeo looks to be pretty cunning move on the Spaniards part. Entering a new segment is never easy but when you’ve got 70% of your DNA handed to you on a plate, the risk is substantially minimized.
SEAT though have to be credited for over a quarter of the handiwork on the new Exeo – their arrow nose design, sporty tailpipes, that kind of thing. But the majority of the stem cells are Audi A4 throwbacks and that gives it a certain kind of kudos. It also allowed SEAT to launch the car within eighteen months of idea stage and offer ‘premium quality at a sub premium price.’
The design work is elegant but there is certainly room for creative licence should SEAT ever produce an ‘FR’ or Cupra version. Currently there is an entry level ‘S,’ an ‘SE’ and a Sport version and even the base example has adequate kit to square up to the Ford Mondeo and Mazda6 with a cool, easy confidence. For £17,740 you get USB connectivity, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, dual zone climate control and alloy wheels. Safety is also well governed with the two-stage airbag approach and heated and electric doors and mirrors mean effortless comfort. Style comes as standard too with exterior front fog lamps and colour-coded door handles and mirrors. The Exeo SE gives you additional rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror, leather steering wheel and gearknob and sound-deadening windscreen.
The Sport with its hip-moulded seats, trim detail, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, 18” wheels and lowered suspension does have a youthful appeal. You clearly have to be young to endure the lack of give over potholes but its dynamic prowess is especially good, even more so when you consider its TDi life blood. There is also a 2.0-litre petrol TSI with 200 PS available but as the majority of Exeo’s will be fleet cars and therefore flogged for thousands of extra miles, it is the Diesel with 143 PS that they expect to sell the most of. Arriving in Autumn is also a 120PS diesel and for the more restless drivers there is a 173PS version of the 2.0-litre oil burner which is on sale this April but for the purpose of today’s driving exercise the 143PS is the car of choice.
Around the hilly lanes of the Cotswolds, this 2.0-litre TDi sport gave good chase and the steering felt nicely weighted for a more intense drive (in the SE it’s noticeably lighter). The Exeo refused to loose traction when forced back on itself through turns and its plumb line accuracy was more than enough to send us away with a conclusive verdict, ok SEAT – job done! You’ve got the pace, fuel economy, equipment, boot space, fold down seats for the private buyers, the smart interior finish from the previous Audi A4 Cabrio and the borrowed loyalty of aspiring Audi buyers; who cares if the product isn’t wholly new – we’re all for recycling if it can bring us as much satisfaction as the first time around.
